A Poem for Friday

An Epilogue

I have seen flowers come in stony places
And kind things done by men with ugly faces,
And the gold cup won by the worst horse at the races,
So I trust too.

Today....

.....I have mostly been weaving

but also removing badly applied* faux gilding from a sheep's skull with my ersatz Dremel. As you do.

*by me, having been wrongly advised. I am now intending to acquire proper Japan Gold Size and real gold leaf. We sell these in the WD shop!

Even The Dungeon is Hot!

I have adopted the continental approach in the last few days - doing my few fixed hours in shop or office and then coming home for a rest before venturing out to the studio for at least a couple of hours each day. So progress has been being made (that sounds like a sentence from a Latin grammar exercise).

The sharp eyed will notice that this now completes the first word goder (repairer).

Now to walk the doglet in the cool of the night. We are off to the station to meet my Boy from the London train. Tomorrow afternoon I am going up to London to meet with my dear friend Eleanor for a Crafty Girls' Night in her studio and then galleries with her and Toxie (aka Toxic Sarah, so named for her 'gung ho' attitude to toxic substances when painting!) We were all students together at WD.

Procrastination Over

I have been avoiding the bottom right hand section of the tapestry for too long - indecisive about how best to render the strong acute lines of the spire (dimly seen in red) after some struggles with the least acute one. As always, the best remedy is simply to get to it and work through it, so that it what I finally did this morning; and, of course, the solution presented itself. I will now mark the position of the lines as I weave and add them in via wrapped dowel once I cut the piece off the loom.
This evening I went to the WD Visual Arts end of year show; some very strong work and an excellent show over all. I had a strange feeling; wistfulness? Nostalgia? I can't really define it properly. Strange because I am two years beyond graduation and have actually been living the life of a practising artist, have work in exhibitions and a solo show coming up. Why would revisiting make me feel sad?
Tomorrow is Awards Day, I am in the shop during the day, but will probably be able to visit the workshops and such afterwards to see the diploma work and also to attend the party. We are spoilt for social choices in Chichester at the moment; with the festival in full swing the average is about five events a night, from Rock bands to Shakespeare - and two plays at that!

Woolly Wishes and Other Waffle

I have been in the studio a couple of times this week, but forgot to take the iPad. This is annoying because it means that there are no photos to share yet, and also that I had to work without music until I remembered the iPod shuffle in my bag. Sublime few minutes with 'The Lark Ascending' to cheer my day!

I remember a conversation that I had a few years ago with someone, I cannot remember whom, about what heaven might be like. They had this idea that in heaven we will be occupied in some way with the things that bring us most joy here. For me one thing would be weaving, and I carried on thinking about it and that it might mean coloured sheep, so that dyeing with nasty chemicals would be unnecessary. Tonight I found this:-

Lovely Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaay (lovely Day, Lovely Day...)

Bill Withers was playing on the radio as I left the studio this evening! Longest single sung note in recording history according to the DJ.

Working on and around three of the Hebrew characters.

Lovely and cool in my basement with sunny tea breaks in the secret garden, including a planning meeting with Stop the Traffik coordinator HP. Even more exciting ideas for our Anti-Slavery Day events in October!

I have to be very organised from here on in, having started a second part-time job yesterday. Good for the coffers, and also (almost) a distraction from some sad news earlier in the week.

The beach is calling this evening, and another studio day tomorrow.

Look What I Found!

The Holy Grail! All these years; all those conspiracy theories, and Lo! It appears at the top of the stairs to my basement.

On a more mundane note, a bird's nest I found in some cut down laurel bushes in the Deanery garden. Another object for my cabinet of curios.

And progress from the last two days:-
